Student WiFi for PBSA: Why the Sector Needs More Choice

By Rob Lombardi, Student Housing Lead, Wifinity

Over the past few weeks, I have spent a lot of time speaking with people across the student housing and PBSA sector about student WiFi for PBSA.

Operators, universities, investors and partners are asking similar questions: how do we improve the accommodation experience, support students better and make sure the infrastructure behind it is fit for how students live, study and connect?

One theme keeps coming through clearly. Connectivity is core infrastructure for student life.

Students rely on it for learning, entertainment, work, communication and support. For operators, it shapes the day-to-day experience residents have in their buildings. When it works, it creates confidence. When it fails, it is one of the first things students notice.

The student connectivity market needs more choice

The student connectivity market has historically been served by a small number of established incumbent providers, but does the sector have enough choice?

PBSA operators, universities and accommodation providers are under pressure to deliver a high-quality student experience while managing cost, complexity and operational risk. In that context, choice matters.

That is where I believe Wifinity has an important role to play. We can offer the sector a strong alternative, built around student needs, service quality and a clear understanding of complex residential environments.

Connectivity decisions must start with students

Connectivity is often discussed in technical terms: speed, bandwidth, uptime, resilience and coverage. Those things matter, but students do not experience connectivity as a specification. They experience it in moments.

They experience it when they join an online lecture, call home, submit work, stream, game and stay connected to the people and services around them.

Recent research from BE News and Wifinity shows why this matters. While most respondents said their current broadband offer is fit for purpose, the main issues identified were that it needs to be faster and more reliable. In student accommodation, those issues are not minor frustrations. They directly affect the resident experience.

Reliable WiFi now sits alongside location, safety, amenities, community and support. It is part of the accommodation promise.

Service matters as much as speed

Network performance is essential, but it is only half the story. The service model around the network is just as important.

In student housing, small connectivity issues can quickly become resident experience issues. And, as any operator will know, can soon snowball into reputational ones in these viral communities.

A student who cannot get online does not care which part of the supply chain is responsible. They want a clear answer, fast support and a resolution that sticks.

That is why service design matters. Operators need partners who are responsive, transparent and easy to work with. Students need support that is simple, accessible and built around how they live.

At Wifinity, our focus is not only on providing fast, reliable and secure connectivity. It is about delivering a best-in-class service experience around it, reducing friction for residents, supporting operators properly and being accountable for the outcome.

Connectivity and student wellbeing

There is also an important emerging conversation around connectivity and student wellbeing.

Connectivity is not, on its own, a welfare solution and it should not be overclaimed as one. But reliable, always-on connectivity does play a role in the conditions that support student life.

It helps students stay connected with family and friends, access learning resources, use university platforms and reach support services. For some students, especially those living away from home for the first time, that connection matters.

A strong alternative for the sector

The PBSA and student housing sector is rightly focused on improving the student living experience. Connectivity has to keep pace with that ambition.

For many providers, the question is not whether connectivity matters. It clearly does. The question is whether they have enough choice in how it is delivered.

Wifinity offers a strong alternative for operators, universities and accommodation providers who want a service-led approach to connectivity, one that treats digital access as part of the wider accommodation experience, not just a technical requirement.

The sector benefits from more choice. Students benefit from connectivity designed around their needs. Operators benefit from partners who are accountable, responsive and easy to work with.

That is the opportunity ahead, and it is one Wifinity is ready to help the sector meet.
